Build or Buy? Start with What Makes the Business Different

Custom software offers flexibility while creating continuing responsibility. Purchased software accelerates adoption but introduces constraints. The useful question is where the business truly needs to own a distinctive capability.

Separate differentiation from support

If matching participants is central to a marketplace’s value, it may justify proprietary capability. A common internal function may not. Identify what must be different and what simply needs to be reliable.

Imagine a small team considering an internal appointment system. Maintenance, notifications, permissions and support can make it far more than a simple screen. Conversely, a ready-made product may fail a core workflow that cannot reasonably change.

Compare the lifecycle

Include setup, integration, training, operation, updates and exit. Check data export, supplier dependence and available team capacity. Test a realistic workflow before committing.

A hybrid can be sensible: buy the foundation and build the distinctive layer. The right decision protects time for work that creates customer value. Owning code is not automatically an advantage, just as a quick subscription does not establish that a system will serve the company as requirements evolve. Evaluate the operating commitment behind each route, not merely the speed of its first demonstration.
