Hire to Remove a Bottleneck, Not to Copy a Large Company

A founder may request another manager because everything feels pressured, then discover that the new employee needs more direction than the role saves. Hiring does not automatically resolve unclear work.

Name the constraint

Are proposals delayed, follow-ups lost or delivery errors repeated? Identify unowned work, its volume and the required outcome. The remedy might be a specialist, a better process or stopping low-value activity.

Imagine a company seeking an operations director when most pressure comes from manual appointment scheduling. A clearer scheduling process and an empowered coordinator may better suit that stage. The leadership role may become important later, but its timing should follow the actual need.

Define early success

Set observable outcomes such as dependable delivery or fewer unresolved tasks, with the authority and resources needed to achieve them. Avoid a long activity list or an expectation that the employee will simply organize everything.

After hiring, review whether the constraint declined or moved elsewhere. A scalable company adds roles that improve capability rather than layers that distance accountability. Defining the problem before advertising the job improves selection and makes performance evaluation fairer to both the business and the new employee.
